Lewis goes over to Jake's house to see how he's doing; according to his wife, Jake has been in the basement for four days, drinking beer and talking with Augie Distel.  Worried about his friend, Meldrick tells Jake that going on with his life is the only option.
It's Pembleton's turn to make the lunch run; he brings back everything his fellow detectives had ordered, all except for Bayliss, whose grilled cheese sandwich was forgotten.  Bayliss confronts Pembleton, thinking that there is a hidden message behind the ignored sandwich, but Frank genuinely seems to have forgotten it.  Mike Kellerman is back in Baltimore after attending his cousin's wedding in Wisconsin; a visibly happier Jake Rodzinski also reports for duty after serving his suspension.
Kellerman and Lewis head out to the bayshore where a body waits under an old mattress; the corpse turns out to be that of Kenny Damon.  Dead from a single shot to the head, the detectives also find a spent slug in the mud next to Damon.  Kellerman consults a firearms expert, who tells him that the bullets came from a two-shot Cooper Arms Derringer, a very old gun that has no business being out in a modern-day street.
Howard, Kellerman and Lewis talk shop about the Damon murder; the lowlife did have a lot of enemies from his days as a drug dealer (the murder itself seems like a drug execution), but everyone is also wondering where Jake Rodzinski was last night.  Howard assigns the drug angle to Lewis and tells Kellerman to investigate Jake; she expressly tells both detectives not to talk to each other at any time during the investigation, which does not sit well with Lewis; a complaint to Gee gives him nothing.  Meldrick does some investigating and comes up with a potential killer: Antonio Galeno, a Dominican street dealer whose merchandise was once stolen by Damon; that lead is scrapped when Howard points out that Galeno was shot and killed three days before Damon.
Bayliss visits a gourmet bakery and makes a food run of his own; he gives everyone a free pastry and throws it in Frank's face that he didn't get him one.  Kellerman meets with Jake and asks where he was on the night of the murder; Jake claims he was out doing surveillance on a fraud investigation.  Kellerman reviews his notes and notices that Jake had taken a brand-new Lexus out from the motor pool for the surveillance while his partner Pez had taken a Cavalier; Jake explains that he just wanted to drive a $60,000 luxury car for once.  Mike interviews Pez and becomes suspicious when their stories turn out sounding rehearsed.  When Mike tries to interview Carol Rodzinski, Jake suddenly shows up and stops it.
Kellerman, Howard, Lewis and Giardello talk about the case: why did Jake take out a luxury car for fraud surveillance when a Cavalier was much less conspicuous?  Why were there handcuff marks on Damon's wrists?  What is the meaning of the slug found in the mud next to Damon? Why would a Derringer be used as the murder weapon?  At the mention of the word "Derringer," Gee suggests that Edgar Rodzinski's file be pulled from the archives.  The file reveals that Edgar owned a two-shot Derringer; the squad is now certain that Jake is the murderer.
Bayliss reports for duty and is mildly amused to find a grilled cheese sandwich in his mail slot.  He heads over to his desk and sits in the chair, where he finds another grilled cheese.  He opens a drawer and finds more food inside; all in all, he finds about 20 grilled cheese sandwiches in his desk.  He looks over at Frank and tells him that the apology is accepted.
Jake becomes tired of listening to Max's incessant barking; he tells his family to go down to the basement so that they wouldn't see him throwing a cap into the dog.  Pez McCadden is questioned in the Box by Kellerman and Howard but refuses to say anything.  Mike presents two slugs from the Derringer and tells Pez that they now know everything they need to lock both of them up; shaken, Pez finally gives in.  He and Jake had taken two cars to arrest Damon on a bogus car charge; since they had two cars, Damon would have to be handcuffed to the backseat of one for fear of Damon assaulting the lone driver.  They took him to the bayshore, where Jake fired one bullet from his father's Derringer into the mud to scare Damon and another to dent his skull.  Armed with a warrant, Lewis and Munch go to Holy Redeemer Cemetery and arrest Jake Rodzinski for the murder of Kenny Damon.
