420  THE WEDDING
Episode 54
Original Air Date: 5/10/96
Written by Henry Bromell
Directed by Alan Taylor

Lewis arrives to work and asks Kellerman if he looks different; Kellerman answers no.  Meldrick announces that he is getting married today, then throws up to prove his point; Kellerman disbelieves at first, but Lewis tells him that he's "serious as a heart attack."  Lewis gathers every detective in the coffee room and tells them that he is marrying someone named Barbara Shivers at the end of the shift.  Just then, Giardello announces that a dead body has been found in Mt. Washington, but finds out no one can go because every detective has been asked by Lewis to help him slap a wedding together; Gee decides to work the murder himself.
Kay comes to work with her sister Carrie, on vacation to Baltimore from Florence.  Gee asks Kay to be the secondary in the murder; Kay leaves Carrie at her desk with the express orders to stay put.  Munch refuses to help Lewis, firmly convinced that the whole wedding is one big practical joke.  Kellerman and Bayliss notice Carrie at Kay's desk and immediately start a flirting competition with her.
On the way to the crime scene, Kay admits that her sister's crazy; Gee replies that he finds her very pleasant.  The two are also skeptical of Lewis' wedding; Kay tells Gee that she cannot imagine Lewis married.  The dead man in question turns out to be Kevin Lugo, Baltimore's resident shock jock crammed full of weird opinions; he had been shot six times with a 9-millimeter handgun.  Giardello and Howard visit radio station WJHU, Lugo's employer, where they find out that Lugo was healthy in the ratings department, but also had too many enemies to count, especially among anti-abortion groups.  Paul Lupkis, the station manager, also notifies them of a $5,000 reward offered by WJHU for information leading to a conviction.
In between flirting with Carrie, Bayliss helps Pembleton find some lilies for Lewis' wedding.  Frank grows increasingly wary of whether or not the whole thing is a joke; he tells Kellerman to find Lewis and seek the truth.  Mike finds Meldrick sitting at the front steps of the stationhouse; Lewis proves that he's serious by asking Kellerman to be his best man and to hold the ring until the wedding.
Gee and Kay return to the squadroom and look at anti-abortion groups as possible suspects, but find nothing.  Meldrick enters Gee's office and asks to be excused in order to prepare for his wedding; the request is readily granted.  Gee and Kay are called back to WJHU, where a disc jockey named Simon Jackson tells them that his friend Raymond Desassy killed Kevin Lugo.  The two officers go to Desassy's residence; when Howard announces their presence, Desassy pulls out a gun, but before he can shoot, Giardello whips out his own gun and fires, killing Desassy.  Kay is given bad news from the squadroom; Raymond Desassy was in jail when Kevin Lugo was shot; upon hearing that, Gee starts to feel intense guilt at shooting an innocent man, despite Kay reminding him that Desassy had tried to shoot them.  Gee and Kay drag Simon Jackson into the Box, where Jackson reveals that his statement was nothing more than a joke, which makes Giardello even more angry.  Later on, Kay suggests to Gee that they go to the wedding party to calm down.
Everyone Lewis invited shows up at the Belvedere Hotel for the wedding, even Munch, who steadfastly maintains that the entire thing is a joke.  Lewis and his bride are late, and soon everyone starts to think Munch's way, especially Pembleton, who makes a classic rant about how he will murder Lewis for making up such an elaborate practical joke.  Eventually, the bride and groom show up, they get married, and the real party begins: Tim and Mike end up in a shoving match between dances with Carrie, a melancholy Gee takes one look at Lewis and bride and reveals to Kay that he misses his wife, and to top it all off, Mary Pembleton goes into labor, prompting Kellerman to call it "one hell of a wedding."

Note: even though the name Margaret May is listed as the actress who played Kay's sister, the truth is that Margaret May doesn't exist; Melissa Leo played both Howard sisters.
