It is Pembleton's first day back on duty after suffering his stroke, but Barnfather and
Gaffney suggest to Giardello that Frank not be allowed to return to homicide; Gee defends
Frank by stating that numerous doctors have given a positive prognosis on his
condition. Here it is learned that Megan Russert is on a leave of absence after jetting off to France
and eloping with a French diplomat.
Bayliss gets a call for a body down in Sowebo and takes Munch and Brodie with
him. Along the way, Munch reveals his resentment of what he views as Pembleton's exceptional
treatment by Giardello; Bayliss doesn't want to hear any of it. The victim is Frances Uba,
an elderly woman who was shot at very close range while cooking breakfast. The detectives
notice that the house is carrying a horrible stench; Brodie finds the source of the smell,
a male pig named Angie, found in the basement. A neighborhood canvass is done, but some
of what they hear is contradictory; according to some, Frances Uba's relationship with
her son Gerry was strained at best, while others say that they got along very well.
Frank walks into the squadroom; the world seems to stand still for a moment as everyone
in the squadroom takes a good look at him. Howard, Lewis and Kellerman greet him and notice
a few things different about Frank; he walks unsteadily, his talking is slow and labored
(it take him a while to recognize Kellerman), and he had grown some hair so people wouldn't
notice the scars on his head.
Gee has a long discussion with Frank; the lieutenant tells him that he cannot be
reinstated as a detective until he passes his firearms test again, and that he'll be working
half-days entirely in the squadroom until he passes the test; in addition, Gee tells him
that he will act as a consultant for the other detectives, which Pembleton finds very
funny and not funny at the same time. Frank angrily tells Gee that he has earned the right
to be a detective by putting himself in jeopardy for the last 13 years; Gee replies that
he has put himself in jeopardy for letting him return to homicide in the first
place. Suddenly, Kellerman rushes over and tells Gee that a hostage situation has erupted at
Parkview Middle School.
Bayliss and Munch return to the squadroom and see Frank; Tim is happy and relieved to
see his partner and goes out of his way to accommodate him, which Frank sees as
annoying. Munch, on the other hand, seems to have cultivated a healthy dislike of Frank during the
summer.
Giardello, Lewis and Kellerman go to Parkview and find two dead on the perimeter and the
shooter holed up in a third-story classroom with a teacher and 15 students. Lewis and
Kellerman interview the witnesses, but get very little on the identities of the people
inside. Meanwhile, Bayliss and Munch interview Gerry Uba's girlfriend, who confirms that he is
Angie's owner; she also reveals his father had committed suicide and that Gerry had taken it
frighteningly well.
After forgetting who he was talking to on the phone (the uncle of a hostage at Parkview)
and being forced to call in a lunch order, a very long half-day ends and Frank gets up to
go home. Munch finally reveals the origin of his discontent with Pembleton: he was the one
who yelled for a doctor when Frank went down and he had called multiple times during his
recovery, but Frank had never acknowledged him. When Frank suggests to Tim that they both
should look for Gerry Uba, Bayliss tells him to go home. Feeling alienated from his
colleagues because of his debilitated condition, Frank makes a stop at the gun range on the
way home and decides to test his skills; he fails miserably.
A phone connection is made between the hostage shooter and the police; he commands them
to give him some beer, but when officers ask him to trade the hostages for the beer, the
shooter refuses. With no alternatives to pursue, all the detectives and QRT officers can
do is wait. |
