The hostage situation continues into the late evening hours. Barnfather, fed up with
waiting, tells Jasper to ready QRT troops for infiltration of the building; Giardello,
aware that the hostage taker will start killing again if troops enter the building, convinces
them to wait at least a little while more. Meanwhile, Frank sits at home, thinking about
the injustice of it all. His wife tries to comfort him; Frank, appreciative of all her
support, tries to show his love for her,
but finds that the blood-thinning medicine he needs to take to prevent another stroke also
prevents him from getting into a romantic mood, making him even more frustrated. Later on,
while Frank and Mary watch a news broadcast about the school hostage situation, Frank
says, more to himself than his wife, that he should be out there helping; eventually this
thought overwhelms him and he gets up to go to the school.
Munch and Brodie watch the news broadcast about the hostage situation from the squadroom,
when Brodie suddenly says that he was evicted from his apartment. Munch, in a fit of
kindness, tells Brodie that he can stay at his house. Back at the school, Barnfather says
that the police have waited long enough and that QRT must be sent in; just when QRT is
given the green light, a woman stumbles out the front door of the school; it is Donna
DiGrazi, sixth-grade history teacher and one of the hostages. She tells them that the
man holding the kids hostage only wants one thing- his pig.
Bayliss and Munch go looking for Maureen on a tip from Frank that a woman often
shelters her boyfriend if he has committed a crime; Munch is amazed that Bayliss is
taking advice from someone who can barely put a lunch order together. When they get to
Maureen's house looking for Gerry, a neighbor tells them that Gerry hasn't been around.
DiGrazi goes back into the school and finds that all the furniture in her room has
been moved to the center; she tells the hostage taker, Gerry Uba, that the police were looking
for his pig. Uba replies that if the police don't bring him his pig very soon, more
people will die. Outside the school, Animal Control confirms that a pig was brought in
and that it will be sent down to the school ASAP; the pig is barely six blocks from the
school when Gerry Uba decides that time's up; he raises his gun. A shot is heard over the phone
connection, which convinces everyone to initiate the QRT strike.
Uba takes a match and ignites the pile of furniture. The strike force bursts into the
building and guide the hostages to safety; while there they
find two more bodies. The strike force reaches the third floor, where they find DiGrazi
and a student named Darcy Cole, a victim of Uba's gun. They soon find Uba himself; he
bolts out of the squadroom, covered in flames. With the capture of the suspect, the
hostage situation ends; Gee prepares to go down to the morgue, but suddenly Frank shows up
at the scene. Gee tells Frank to go home, not waiting for an explanation as to why Frank would come down to the scene
of a redball on his first day back from a life-threatening stroke. The whole squad
(minus Munch and Pembleton) meet at the morgue, where it is confirmed
that Uba is the hostage taker and probably the man who killed Frances Uba. Gee tells
Howard to call Ed Danvers and set up a way to charge Uba with the murders
immediately. Bayliss takes a trip down to the hospital to interview Uba, but finds that he has to wait
for Uba to wake up.
Munch continues to act unfriendly around Pembleton, which prompts Brodie to say something
to Munch about his behavior. Later in the day, Frank's wife calls the squadroom; Munch takes
her messages and gives them to Frank, but he forgets to call back. Another call from Mary
comes in; an annoyed Munch tells Pembleton to call his wife. Frank tries to do so,
but finds that he can't remember his phone number. Munch, realizing how helpless Frank
might be feeling, writes the number down and gives it to him.
Bayliss eventually interviews Uba and finds that he was trying to kill himself and that he had
killed his mother Frances because he didn't want her to go through the suffering his
father's suicide caused. Darcy Cole eventually dies of the gunshot wound, increasing the
number of people Uba killed to six. Danvers works some magic and comes up with a way
to charge Uba while he's still in the hospital.
It is several hours past the shift; Frank stands in his bathroom. Mary tells him
not to forget to take his medicine; he replies that he won't forget, then proceeds to toss
the pills into the toilet. He flushes, throws the bottle into the trash, and goes to bed.
