It is lunchtime inside the Maryland State Penitentiary. Claude Vetter and James Douglas,
two hardened criminals, bump into each other while walking to the tables; Douglas whips
out a knife and stabs Vetter in the heart. Pandemonium ensues and the riot police are
called to break it up; when it is all over, James Douglas lies dead.
Bayliss takes the case and enlists the help of everyone in the squad minus Frank, who
is not allowed to leave the stationhouse. Interviews with other prisoners, including Tom
Marans, Alex Robey, and Trevor Douglas (cousin of James), don't reveal much, but Bayliss
fixates on one prisoner in particular: Elijah Sanborn, convicted of assassinating the man who
killed his wife. Bayliss knows from his conversation with Sanborn that he is trying to tell
him something about Douglas' murder; Tim also finds Sanborn endearing because he has eyes
that remind him of his late father.
Brodie notices that Pembleton is no longer taking his medication and astutely realizes
that Frank had stopped because he wanted to concentrate fully on his upcoming firearms test
and that continuing to take the pills would cloud his mind.
Bayliss does a little investigating and finds that Elijah Sanborn's son Kingston was
arrested a week ago for armed robbery. He goes back to the Pen and presents Sanborn with the
intent to barter a lesser sentence for Kingston in exchange for Elijah's information about
the murder, which Elijah vehemently refuses. Not wanting to give up, Bayliss (and Kellerman)
goes over to the Sanborn home to talk to Maya, Kingston's sister and Elijah's estranged
daughter; Bayliss tells her that Kingston will be let off easy if she tells her father to
reveal his information about the Douglas murder. Elijah agrees with one condition; he wants
to talk to his son. Kingston is brought to him; Elijah tells him to become an upstanding
individual. He then tells Bayliss that he was the one who killed James Douglas.
Bayliss knows Sanborn is lying despite a written confession, but can't seem to do anything
about it. Later that night, Tim reveals to Mike his strained relationship with his father;
he apparently admires the amount of love Elijah has for his kids, something he had never
experienced himself. Suddenly, Lewis shows up and tells Bayliss that Trevor Douglas was
just beaten into a coma. Tim and Mike go back to the Pen, where it is revealed that Trevor
had killed his own cousin over a carton of cigarettes and that the retribution was served up
by Tom Marans, James Douglas' prison wife.
Bayliss is sent out to the Pen one more time to give the good news to Elijah. Tim
sees Maya outside the prison; he tells her to patch things up with her father before
it is too late to do so.
