Note: This episode is a continuation story of a Law & Order episode aired two nights earlier (11/12/97).

New York detectives Curtis and Briscoe interview Johnnie Ramirez, their primary witness in the Brittany Janaway murder; he reveals that he was in Baltimore on the night of October 9 and that he had seen Brittany being attacked in her home.  Briscoe and Curtis, along with Munch and Falsone, go to the Janaway house, where they find that the Janaways have packed and gone home to Baltimore.
Briscoe and Curtis enter the squadroom, where Pembleton and Bayliss greet them with a mixture of familiarity and contempt.  Giardello tells the four detectives to split into two groups for the investigation.  Munch (the primary) and Briscoe head over to Madison General Hospital, where Steven Janaway still has an office; a nurse there tells the detectives that Janaway had treated his daughter there three years ago for vaginal bleeding.  Falsone and Curtis make a trip to the Janaway house and are exasperated to find that Mrs. Janaway decided to ruin it by vacuuming the crime scene.
Munch and Briscoe find Dr. Janaway at a country club and escort him downtown for questioning. During the interview, Munch makes it clear that they think Janaway raped his own daughter and that it may have been brought on by the corrupted image of her beauty brought on by being a teenage model; Janaway repeatedly denies ever having assaulted her.
New York state attorneys Jack McCoy and Jamie Ross discuss ways to convince Baltimore to allow extradition of Steven Janaway back to New York; McCoy presents his case as second- degree murder, depraved indifference.  He declares that since Janaway fully knew that his daughter was raped two weeks before and did nothing while the wound evolved into the toxic shock syndrome that eventually killed Brittany, he can be called a murderer.  Ross expresses her doubts, but McCoy goes with it; he is eventually turned down in favor of Danvers' argument, but is allowed to work with Danvers during the trial.
The trial starts and Ramirez tells the jury in detail about what he saw on the night of October 9th.  Jodi Farrar, one of Brittany's schoolmates when she lived in Baltimore, tells about how one school day Brittany had started bleeding.  McCoy and Danvers do a good job of pointing out that all evidence points to Steven Janaway as the rapist, but are surprised when the defense attorney calls Steven Janaway to the stand.  They are surprised even more when Janaway testifies under oath that he could not have raped his daughter because he was not even at home on October 9th; he was at the Harbor Court Hotel with another woman.  McCoy and Danvers request a continuation of the investigation from Judge Aandahl; she grants them 48 hours to check Janaway's alibi.
Multiple teams are used to check on the alibi; it is confirmed that Janaway was at the hotel with another woman named Andrea Plotkin, a medical school classmate of Janaway's who had been carrying on an affair with him for the past 10 years.  The detectives decide to hold two separate interviews with Steven and Gayle Janaway.  Falsone and McCoy interrogate Steven Janaway and find out from him that his wife regularly abused their daughter.  Armed with that knowledge and pictures showing a lifeless Brittany Janaway, Munch and Danvers force Gayle Janaway to confess to her daughter's murder.
As Jack McCoy prepares to leave Baltimore, Falsone consults him about the merits of getting shared custody of Daniel; McCoy replies that the decision is his own.  Falsone visits Steven Janaway, who expresses appreciation that the detective had worked so tirelessly to figure out who killed his daughter; Paul explains that he has a son of his own and that he had missed half his son's life spending time by himself, and it already feels like it's too late.  Before driving away from Janaway's house for the last time, Falsone takes out his wallet and looks at his little boy's picture, and smiles to himself.
