Jann Arden - Sleepless
take your coat and shoes off
come and sit beside me
we could talk for hours
or we could just do nothing
She stretched her tan legs out across the tar-stained roof, her smile sublime. One long, strong arm draped itself across the splintered and faded cotton tee-shirt she wore.
He lay there beside her; silent, contemplative as possible. Watching a next-door neighbor pour a bucketful of water onto a pair of vigorously mating dogs. Understanding, in a roundabout way, just how they felt right at that moment.
"Don't get any ideas, wise guy." Her mouth caressed his brow as she turned from him to stare at the beach.
don't you think it's funny
tell me what the point is
we could die tomorrow
might as well enjoy this
Someone who could so easily disassemble his inner workings only commented mentally at her lanky ease; she felt floppy, formless in his grip. She felt his hand tighten against her naked belly and knew that she had handed him an idea. And on a silver platter.
It was the summer; soaking energy from them both. Long days at work only made it easier to lie out and bake.
She yawned, tongue flicking briefly out, setting his eyes to a teardrop-shaped dot of sweat as it slid down her neck, coming to rest upon the white tee-shirt she wore. It sank in as the sun did, quenching his mind, making California's summer seem less draining.
Their time together felt ageless, though outwardly it looked meaningless, slothful. With their friends busy and running in as many different directions as there were hours in the day, these little moments were what felt meaningful. It was everything he'd ever wanted, and all that she'd tried to run from.
Might as well give in and enjoy things before she lost him, too. Might as well pretend that spring wasn't melting into California's ultimate golden lie, the perfect summer.
give me all your disappointments
i'll give you my secrets
we could lay our heads down
or be forever sleepless
They had become some other entity, somehow; no longer two separate people. LennyNLaverne. One whole being, made up of what was lacking within each of them. When had acceptance arrived? Her fingers flexed against his thick bicep. A different form of strength coursing between them.
four billion people surround us
so many souls lose their way
all that we have is each other
and that's all i've ever wanted
yeah, yeah, yeah...
This was her secret hymn to freedom. It was odd to think of things that way. Independence in love. Freedom in comittment. But they could remain this way forever, locked in sun-fused embrace, and she wouldn't mind it.
Sleep came to him in the cooling Los Angeles night, while they hung heavy beneath it. Over a roof they should be sharing. Could be, if she gained more spirit.
Smiling, she closed her eyes.
