Mr. Show
OK. I had seen the show back when it was actually on, and it was pretty funny, but I didn't get HBO when it first started, and when I was able to watch it, it had been moved to Mondays at midnight. That was a bit harsh. So, even though I had a passing awareness of the show and a particular sketch I loved (Space Racists, I think, was the title). Then I stopped getting HBO, and Mr. Show passed into oblivion.
Then they went and released seasons 1 and 2 on DVD.
I have been watching more Mr. Show than is healthy. My new favorite sketch is Thrilling Miracles, where Bob gets repeatedly hit over the head by David with a pan, and Nathan's Iguana, where Bob plays and iguana and David plays a slacker who defines himself by the kind of novelty pet he has at the moment. That sketch was immediately followed by Jeepers Creepers Superstar, a parody of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Jack Black as a slacker with a following. Fortunately, it had nothing to do with the atrocious movie Jeepers Creepers
The coolest thing about the DVD is the commentary track, which rarely has anything to do with what's going on on screen.
There's supposed to be a movie soon called Run Ronnie Run. It's finished and ready for release, but New Line is all nervous about actually releasing it, thinking there will be no audience. It killed at Sundance, which means nothing, and Mr. Show has quite the cult following, but New Line is nervous nonetheless.
The above picture, by the way, is by photographer Chris Buck. I have no affiliation with him, but a Google image search for Mr. Show brought up that picture, along with others that seem to have nothing at all to do with Mr. Show. I really liked the picture and thought it captured some of the oddness of Bob and David.
Chris Buck's site also features a story about taking that particular picture.
Interesting side note: in researching Mr. Show, I have done searches by the show title and by the stars, Bob and David. Looking for Bob Odenkirk brings up the site www.odenkirk.com, which prominantly features a picture of your Bob and mine as Dickie Crickets, megaphone crooner extraordinaire, but has no other Bob information and seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the esteemed Mr. Odenkirk. I found it amusing, and I don't know why. Evidently many Bob fans have been confused by this site as well, posting in the message board with the hopes that Bob will answer, but the Odenkirks seem to not take kindly to that. You are warned.
Searching for David Cross invariably brings up the wrong David Cross.
