Gertrude starts out in the British Music Hall with her Dad singing "Piccadilly".
Gertie works her way to London and is hired by Charlot Revue and meets her childhood friend there, Noel Coward. She gets her big break when the star of the show cannot perform and so she fills in as the understudy singing "Burlington Bertie from Bow"
Gertie moves to America to star in a new revue, and she is a hit with "Limehouse Blues".
She becomes the toast of society with several admirers
Gertie then stars in Oh Kay singing "Someone to Watch Over Me"
After the show, Gertie hold a party and sings "Dear Little Boy" to Tony Spencer, who has arrived from England for her opening night.
After telling Tony that she can't marry him, Gertie decides that she needs a holiday and to spend some time with her daughter, Pamela
After failing to make a bond with her daughter, Noel Coward writes Private Lives and Gertie stars in it with him. She sings "Someday I'll Find You".
When the Depression hits, Gertie fails to realise that she is living beyond her means and finds herself bankrupt. Noel tells her, after she throws a party on the opening night of her new play, that she will go to gaol unless she pays off her debts. Gertie takes on extra work and sings for a dance competition, "Do, Do, Do"
She works her debts off but in the process, she ends up in hospital with exhaustion. She then stars in Tonight at Eight with Noel Coward.
She meets Richard Aldrich at a surprise birthday party Noel holds for her and she ends up insulting everyone there.
After staring in a play at his theater in Cape Cod, she stars in Lady in the Dark. At rehursal, she sings "My Ship" but has trouble with the final song "The Saga of Jenny". Richard takes her to the Cotton Club where the music there gives her an idea of how to sing the final song.
She is a hit again and marries Richard.
