The story starts with Maria (Julie) singing up on the hillside.
She then runs back to the Abbey where the the Reverend Mother sends her the be a governess for the children of Captain Von Trapp.
Maria leaves the Abbey and travels to the Von Trapp house.
She arrives at the house and meets the children.
After dinner, there is a thunder storma sn she conforts the children in her room by singing to them "My Favourite Things".
The Captian goes to Vienna the next day and Maria takes the children out for the day where she teaches them to sing "Do Re Mi".
When the Captain returns, he is angry with Maria, but then apologises when he discovers that Maria has taught the children to sing.
The children and Maria then put on a puppet show for the Captain and the Baroness.
They then decide to throw a huge party and during the party, the Captain and Maria dance The Laendler.
After the party, Maria flees back to the Abbey after she was told be the Baroness that the Captain was in love with her. She finds comfort in the Reverend Mother who tells her to go back and confront her feelings
When she returns, the Captain breaks his engagement to the Baroness and proposes to Maria
They marry with everyone's blessing
When the Captain and Maria return from their honeymoon, they discover that the Captain has been requested to join the German forces and so the family decide to leave Austria
They perform at the Austrian festival
and then they take refuge at the Abbey from the Nazis before finally able to escape over the mountains.
