Victoria is a penniless soprano who meets Toddy after an audition at Chez Lui
They meet in a restaurant where Victoria is trying to receive a free dinner by placing a cockroach in her salad.
Victoria stays the night at Toddy’s flat. Toddy’s ex-boyfriend Richard returns to the flat and finds Victoria dressed in his clothes. She punches him and he thinks she is man. Toddy then comes up with the idea of Victoria being "a woman pretending to be a man, pretending to be a woman".
Victoria auditions for Andre Cassell as Victor and amazes him with "his" incredible, glass shattering voice. Victor makes his debut in "Le Jazz Hot" and becomes the "Toast of Paris".
He/she attracts the attention of Chicago nightclub owner King Marchan who is in Paris with his flashy girlfriend Norma and bodyguard, Squash.
Victor also performs in "The Shady Dame from Seville".
King Marchan is intrigued with Victor. He is not sure whether he is actually a she. He goes out to dinner with Toddy, Victor and Andre Cassell.
After dinner, the party go the Chez Lui where Victor and Toddy sing "You and Me" together.
Richard arrives at Chez Lui with a crowd of people and a brawl starts in the club. Victor accidentally punches King and they escape from the club just as the police are arriving.
King tells Victor that he doesn’t care if he is a man and he kisses him. Victoria tells him that she is not a man and kisses him back. Later in the night, Squash arrives back at the hotel and finds Victoria and King in bed together. Thinking King is gay, he tell King that in fact he is gay also.
Victor performs the song "Crazy World".
King and Victoria continue their relationship in secret
Victoria wants to go dancing but the only way they can do that is if they go to a gay night club which King doesn’t enjoy
Finally, very unhappy with the situation, Victoria decides that she is going to go back to being a woman and Toddy fills in for her in "The Shady Dame from Seville".
