THE MATRIX : OST

This yearīs surprise cyberpunk spectacle mayhem called The Matrix has yet another forcefull blow to deliver us. This time its not for both eyes and ears, its only for the latter. But that doesnt mean the soundtrack is any worse than the movie, no, actually its as awesome as the movie.

There were realeased two Matrix soundtracks - one is the instrumental score made my Don Davis and the other one is "the album", which means, that it is made up from songs of various artists. Of course I bought the "various artists" one. Since the movie is a hardcore cyberpunk with lots of breathtaking action sequences and visual effects, the bands on the OST all come from either hard rock or electronic beat community. Some of the hard-rockers, for example is Marilyn Manson, Monster Magnet, Rob Zombie, Ministry, Rammstein, Deftones or Rage against the machine and the electronic bands menu consists of bands like Prodigy, Propellerheads, Rob D, Meat beat manifesto or Hive.

Some of the songs were played in the movie - i remember hearing the awesome Spybreak! in even more awesome shootoout in the office building lobby, Du hast and Mindfields in the disco scene and Wake up and Rock is dead during the ending credits. Unfortunately the song that Neo is litening to in the beginning (when he has his headphose on) - Teardrop from Massive Attack, isnt on the OST, wich certainly is a shame.

Matrix OST is one of them heavy electronic albums such as the soundtracks for Mortal Kombat (and MK2), Solider, The Jackal, Johny Mnemonic or the famous cult OST for the Spawn movie. Eventhough I find Jackal (expecially the outrageous song from the beginning....i think it was Primal scream or Massive Attack) and Spawn soundtracks to be pretty good, Marix beats them easily. The main reason for that, i think, is producerīs awesome choice of bands and their songs. Yes, Jackal and Spawn STīs were enough dark and tough to give you the feeling, but still were far from the effect of The Matrix OST. Not only does it fit the movie atmosphere, but its also worth listening like a normal music compilation, without the context of the movie itself. Thatīs a very rare thing to find among many of the "various artists" soudtracks. Even if this was the only reason for the high quality of this soundtrack (and it is NOT the only reason), it would be enough to say that it IS going to be as famous soundtrack as The Matrix is among movies.
