It's a Date

By Laure Alexander

"Why did we have to come so early?" Cordelia whined for the dozenth time in the past thirty minutes, as she shifted from foot to foot.

Xander turned from his conversation with the RPG club and sighed. "Hon, I told you; we want good seats don't we?"

"Do we? Why? What's the point? You'll be all over me within five minutes."

He gave her a scandalized look, then saw that the doors were being opened. Nearly bouncing in eagerness, he reached inside his coat and drew out his pride and joy.

Cordelia gave him a look of horror and wildly shook his head. "Uh uh, no way. I finally gave into you and agreed to come see a movie I've seen a dozen times on cable only because you won those free tickets to the premiere, but I will NOT be seen with a geek with a lightsword."

"Saber," he hissed, glancing frantically around at the gaily costumed crowd to see if anyone was listening. "It's a lightSABER, sweetie."

Crossing her arms over her chest, Cordelia stared at him, lips pursed. "WhatEVER. And just how did you of all people win free tickets?"

He flashed her a brilliant smile, glad that she was changing the subject. "Trivia." Her skeptical look did nothing to diminish his pride and he took her hand, tugging her forward in the line of movie goers.

"What kind of trivia?"

"Well...Star Wars, of course."

"Oh, of course." She watched as he rested the lightsaber on his other shoulder and just sighed, then glanced at the crowd of people. Every nerd in the school was here, every science square, every computer geek, every gaming freak. Not one popular person.

Except her.

As they neared the doors, Xander looked down at Cordelia. She was wearing a white blouse and purple skirt and matching jacket and looked so elegant. He couldn't believe that she was with him, going to see the rerelease of his all time favorite movie. He couldn't wait to see Star Wars on the big screen for the first time, but that Cordelia was with him made the night truly special.

As Xander's hand tightened in hers, Cordelia glanced up and saw the love in his eyes. She smiled and leaned against him, suddenly glad she had agreed to come with him.

"Thank you for coming with me, Cordy," he said softly.

"Fair's fair. We have the Spring Fling dance in two weeks," she quipped, peeking at him through her lashes. She saw the smile fading from her typical snippy response to the intimacy of the moment, and sighed, giving up the battle within herself.

She really did love the doofus.

Snuggling close to him, Cordelia rested her head on his free shoulder. "I'm glad you asked me. I want to try to understand your obsession."

"Does that mean...you're interested in something in my life?" he asked hesitantly, as if he expected another sarcastic remark.

"Since I'm interested in you, I guess that's a yes," she replied softly.

Xander grinned in happiness and whispered in her ear, "Good, because I managed to find a good copy of Leia's metal bikini for later tonight."

Cordelia felt herself blushing and she wanted to retort, but too many images were filling her teenage head. Dragging him into the entryway of the theater, she flashed him an interested look. "Only if you bring the lightsaber."

Xander flushed and fumbled in his pocket for the tickets.
