Agustin Farabundo Martí was a leading radical who became an organiser of the poor in various Marxist groups. When the president announced the communists could take part in elections in 1931, the military staged a coup. They allowed the elections to continued but banned successful candidates from taking office. The communists started a short-lived insurrection that was rapidly defeated with little loss of life. Martí was executed and the army carried out a brutal campaign of reprisals, killing thousands of people - mainly Native Indians -in what became known as 'la matanza'. |
