This is a Planet of the Apes Gorilla background mask. It is designed to be worn over the head and closes in the rear with a Velcro closure. Much faster than applying appliances to every actor, it was designed to be worn by the gorillas in the background. However, many of them are featured prominently in all of the films. They can be seen quite extensively in the second film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, on the gorillas wearing the gorilla background costume and in crowd scenes..
