Get To Know Davy A Little Better!
David Thomas Jones was born in Manchester, England on December 30, 1945 to Harry and Doris Jones. David, along with his three sisters, Hazel, Beryl, and Linda, were all raised by their mother while their father worked on the railroad. However, sadly, in 1960, David's mother passed away after a long stuggle with emphysema.
David's first play was Tom Sawyer, but after he lost his mother, he decided to try horse racing. He became an apprentice to a man named Basil Foster. Mr. Foster realized David's acting talents, though, and encouraged him to continue his acting career.
Soon after, David found parts on shows such as Coronation Street and June Evening. Oliver! came in a short while, which seemed to be David's big break. He was even nominated for a Tony award for his role as the Artful Dodger. And Davy appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show performing Oliver! the same time the Beatles made their debut. Next Davy came to Los Angelos with the U.S. Stage tour of Pickwick where he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. Here he recorded a solo album titled no other than which was released in 1965.
David Jones became a well known name. Teen Magazines were posting his picture all over 16 and Tiger Beat. And David soon became a teen idol, even with his own fan club. Again, noticing Davy's talents in T.V. shows such as Ben Casey and The Farmer's Daughter, David was chosen to star in the new television series, The Monkees.
September 12, 1966 was the airing of the Monkees first episode. Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith were also chosen to star with Davy. The show was very successful and before they knew it, the Monkees became a real music group!
Davy performed some of the more popular songs such as Daydream Believer, Valleri, A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, She Hangs Out, and various others. The Monkees had made a total of nine albums. In addition, Davy and the Monkees starred the their own movie, Head, and then the T.V. special, 33 1/2 Revolutions Per Monkee.
In 1971, David recorded a second solo album after he recorded his last Monkees album. During this time, Davy released many singles such as "Girl", "Rainy Jane" "Road to Love", and "I Really Love You". david also starred on "The Brady Bunch", "Laugh-In", "The Bluegrass Special", and "Love: American Style".
In 1975, David, along with his songwriters, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and his fellow Monkee, Micky Dolenz, toured and recorded an album for Capital Records. This group soon became known as Dolenz, Jones, Boyce, and Hart.
Oliver! was again in David's schedule in 1976. Then, in 1977, he returned to his homeland to act with Micky in the musical written by Harry Nilsson, The Point. In the early 80's, Davy spent most of his time touring Japan as he signed with Japan Records.
The Monkees 20th anniversary tour was coming up when the Monkees were brought back by popular demand. Arista Records released Then and Now: The Greatest Hits of the Monkees while MTV and Nickelodeon showed re-runs of the Monkees T.V. show. In addition, David, Peter, and Micky released a new album, PoolIt! Music videos were filmed and the Monkees were #1 again.
"They Made A Monkee Out Of Me" was published in 1987. This was David's first biography which featured his experiences as a jockey, Monkee, and includes a lot of great pictures.
In the early 1990's, David starred once again in Oliver! as Fagin and then in Grease as Vince Fontaine. David's passion of horse riding became a part of his life not too long after. And, if 1996, David won his forst race ever in Lingfield, England. His winning horse, Digpast, was given to him as a gift from his daughter Sarah.
1996 was the beginning of the 30th Anniversary Reunion Tour for the Monkees. Also, David and the Monkees starred in the Monkees Documentary (on the Disney Channel) and a new Monkees special which aired on February 17, 1997 on ABC. They even got together to make yet another album, Justus.
David is also continuing to appear in movies, such as the Brady Bunch a few years ago, and T.V. shows such as "The Single Guy"
and "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch". David recently starred in a video for the band sorethumb. "I Want To Be Your Davy Jones" is the title of the song where the video features Davy appearing against a backdrop similar to the Monkees "Daydream Believer" set.
