David Lean is one of the most renownd British directors of all time. Successful screen adaptations of two plays by Noel Coward and two novels by Charles Dickens ensured Lean success during the forties. Later, Lean became known for his epics. Recently, three of David Lean's movies - Brief Encounter (called by some the most English movie ever made), Great Expectations and Lawrence of Arabia - have been voted in the top five British films of all time.
