And More!
"Peckinpah shoots people, we dismember them." -Herschell Gordon Lewis
Herschell Gordon Lewis is the greatest director ever. As you may see, my page is still in the primitive stage, but I'm working on getting pictures and stuff onto the page. Herschell Gordon Lewis is the master genius behind such Classic films as "2,000 Maniacs!", "Color Me Blood Red", "The Wizard of Gore", "A Taste of Blood", "The Gore-Gore Girls", and, the first slasher movie ever, from 1963, "Blood Feast". If you don't like that type of movie, get the hell out of my site! We have no time for you. If you do like that type of movie, however, stay and learn more."Blood Feast", the first violent slasher movie (Psycho was made in 1960, but the two are totally different), stands the test of time and remains to this day an eternal classic. It concerns a man, Fuad Ramses, who is a caterer, but also caters a different type of feast, and Egyptian feast, for his goddess, Istar. This is done by murdering and chopping up virgins and mixing their various body parts in an attempt to reincarnate Ishtar. A detective is romantically involved with ex-playmate Connie Mason, Fuad's next victim! This film, despite its cinematic greatness, is a seminal work in that so much excessive gore had never been seen before, and paved the way for the likes of Leatherface, Freddy, and Jason, to name a few. A must see!
Following the incredible drive-in success of "Blood Feast" in 1963, Herschell Gordon Lewis made what would come to be known by many as his masterpiece, "2,000 Maniacs!" in 1964, just one year after the great "Blood Feast". "2,000 Maniacs!" concerns a town in the deep south which lures northern "yankees" to them and proceeds to slaughter them in increasingly inventive ways, as revenge for a town that was destroyed by northern soldiers during the Civil War. With just the perfect mix of dark humor and gory violence, this movie remains my favorite of H.G. Lewis' movies.
"Color Me Blood Red", the third in the "blood trilogy" (the other two being "Blood Feast" and "2,000 Maniacs!", in that order), though not the best of his films, is nevertheless a masterpiece of comedic horror. Released to great success in 1965, this is the tale of a desperate painter who finds success and fame in the perfect shade of red, you guessed it... BLOOD! This film, very similar to a more comedic Roger Corman picture, is more suddle that H.G. Lewis' previous two films, but still well worth watching.
Herschell Gordon Lewis is a resilient soul, and he clawed his way back to affluence , writing books about subjects as broand and far-ranged as plate collecting, copywriting, and marketing. In a recent interview, Mister Lewis himself (!) told me that there has been talk over the years of another movie, but he has yet to make it.
