GARRETT RICHARD WANG
For the uninitiated,
Garrett Wang is a Chinese-American actor who plays Ensign Harry Kim on
Star Trek: Voyager, the third Star Trek spin-off series of the original
Star Trek. For a detailed biography of him, you can check out his
page on the Official Star Trek
site. For a detailed filmography, you can check out his
page at the Internet Movie Database.
I have had the fortune
of meeting Garrett on two occasions, and also managed to do a phone interview
with him about his life, career, and the movie he co-starred in, "Hundred
Percent."
The first time I met
him was on September 18, 1998, at the Opening Gala of the annual Vancouver
Asian Film Festival, where I asked him if I could do an interview with
him for the the UBC student newspaper, Perspectives.
I wrote a detailed report about it.
The article I wrote
can be found here. I haven't
transcribed the interview yet, mainly because it's over an hour long.
He called me one Sunday evening in early October, 1998.
On November 21, 1998,
I had a second opportunity to meet Garrett in Seattle for the annual Chinese
Information and Service Center Fundraising Dinner. I wrote again
a detailed report.
While I have spoken
to him three times, it doesn't mean I know the guy. My questions in the
interview were about certain experiences in his youth. All I can
say is that he's had to endure hardships that I have had the fortune of
not facing, but he is definately a stronger individual because of it.
That, and the fact that he's a very cool guy!
