Q & A Session -- My answers to your burning questions...
This is an excerpt from the first interview I granted after winning my Oscar (if you've read my "friends" page, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't read that page yet, then you probably should. It'll help you put this section in perspective). Anyway, here goes --
Q: What is unique about you?
A: Do you mean physically, or otherwise? Well let's see... everyone is unique in their own way. We're all different. I think what might really set me apart from other people would be my tenacity, and perhaps my sense of humor. I always try to look for the good in every person and in every situation.
Q: From what do you derive the greatest joy in your life?
A: My family and friends. And without a doubt, from my relationship with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He keeps me anchored, and because I am in Him, I have peace that passes all understanding and joy that goes beyond human comprehension.
Q: Who are your role models?
A: My ultimate role model would be Jesus Christ because He is perfect in every way. My other role models are my Mom, and maybe Oprah Winfrey because of all she's achieved.
Q: What are your pet peeves?
A: Tardiness and sloppiness would have to be the 2 biggest ones.
Q: What are your biggest fears?
A: My biggest fear would be that I would somehow miss God's plan for my life. It is a sad thing to spend your life doing something you weren't called to do. And my other fear is getting stuck in an elevator. Just thinking about that gives me palpitations!
Q: If you were sent to an abandoned island, what movie, CD and book would you take with you?
A: I guess we're assuming that this island is wired for electricity, and that it has a VCR and a CD player! Well, I guess the movie would probably be "Rush Hour" because it would keep me laughing, the CD would be Fred Hammond's "Purpose by Design" and the book would be the Holy Bible.
Q: If you were to better yourself in one way, what would it be?
A: Again, are you talking physically, or otherwise? Cause if you mean physically, I can think of a lot of ways to better myself! Seriously though, I'd probably want to be more vocal about the things that I believe in. I hate the fact that I don't always speak up or speak out when I should.
Q: If you could have prevented a single historical event, which would it be, and why?
A: Definitely colonialism, because no single factor has destabilised my continent and my people more than European enslavement.
Q: If you could have the starring role in a movie already made, which movie would you pick?
A: Definitely "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" Taye Diggs was just too hot! (Actually, I've changed my mind on that one. I saw "The Best Man" last weekend, and I've decided that's the movie I'd want to be in. Morris Chestnut is THE MAN!!!)
(OK, I've changed my mind again. I think I'd like to be in any movie with Boris Kodjoe, who is the hottest thing this side of creation! All I can say is - "God is a good God!!")
Q: If you could have chosen your own first name, would it have been different from what it is now?
A: If you'd asked me this question 10, 15 years ago, I'd have said "without a doubt" because back then, I HATED my name. Every other girl I knew was named Kemi. But now, I really appreciate my name -- it has a beautiful meaning, and I wouldn't change it for the world. (FYI: My full name is Oluwakemi and it means "God takes care of me")
Q: If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?
A: I'd be the singer, Tamia, simply because I want to know what it feels like to be married to Grant Hill. I think he is the ultimate gentleman. Some of the brothers I know need to borrow a page or two from his book!
Q: If your home were to be totally destroyed by fire and you could save just one thing, what would it be?
A: Assuming that my family is already out of the house, I would save the little box that contains all the mementoes that I have of my Mother.
And that's the end of this Q & A session. You guys should look out for me on Larry King Live in the near future! Peace.
