Reviews(with Spoilers)
However, 2ge+her was pleasantly surprising. Yes, it was obviously a parody, and parodies are usually an "insult" to the object parodied... but MTV somehow managed to succeed with both audiences. It's something I say everytime I tell someone about the movie... No matter what your taste, you'll like the movie! But in this review, I'll try to appeal to both audiences, in case there are still some hard-headed ones out there (you know who you are)...
Boy band LOVERS:
Boy band HATERS:
Not only is the script and plot enjoyable, the actors are excellent. Each fills out his/her role perfectly, which I guess is so important when making a movie about boy bands, and emphasizing the 5 different roles involved in making a successful boy band (quoted from Mr. Bob Buss himself ^_~). Casting did an wonderful job here, and each actor was able to bring his character to life (Chad was adorable as the shy one... his obsession with Star Wars was just too good to be true!!). And wasn't it even more appropriate picking Nigel Dick to direct this movie, since he is a well-known pop music video director!
Even better, MTV advertised the movie's fictional boy band, 2ge+her, as they would a real one, premiering a music video on one of their most popular shows, TRL (Total Request Live). It was interesting to see how far MTV could go with the movie, as they tried to blend fiction with reality. Though popularity and boy-band-fame did not follow the fictional band 2ge+her, as MTV would have liked to see, there was enough acceptance that MTV is said to be planning a television series in the near future. The series will follow the boys of 2ge+her, as they try to survive in the music industry. Not a bad "fictional" script, if I do say so myself. MTV's hopeful about the result of their ultimatum: Is art imitating life, or life imitating art? *_*

2gether's rival band, Whoa
A hilarious parody of the current trend of boy-band popularity! Bob Buss is the founder of the popular boy band, Whoa, but as they reach their peak, they fire him.
I must admit, coming into this movie, I expected bad things. When I heard there would be a movie coming out about boy bands, images of boy-band-bashing came to mind (for being a fan, I take a lot of it! >.<)!
Coming into this movie, one must have a sense of humor. It's not hard, once you see how funny the script and characters are! The movie is not without its sarcasm, though, like the ridiculous lyrics to the songs, or the hilarity of the boys' costumes, which are obviously ridiculous (ranging from the stars-and-stripes to fat suits). But it's all in good fun, just like in reality, when the real boy bands come out dressed in costumes and such. As a boy band lover, I also do not deny that there is a pattern in boy bands (the cute one, young one, shy one, older one, etc), but that doesn't mean I like them any less. Maybe I'm not as picky about my favorite artists, and maybe I don't mind being spoonfed pop music. But I also know for a fact that a lot of people jump to the side of boy-band-haters (or even pop-music-haters) because it's "cool." I think that if a boy-band-hater gave the music a chance, he/she would come to realize they're not all that bad. The more popular boy bands, like Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, have continuously asked for respect as real musicians; finally, at least the Backstreet Boys are getting some credit (as seen by their recent Grammy nominations). All in all, what I mean to say is that though 2ge+her is foremostly a parody, the movie does not ostracize boy-band-lovers. By pitting the innocent and spirited up-and-coming boy band (2ge+her) against a nastier and more egotistical one (Whoa), the former comes off as the cheered-on hero.
At the sound of a boy band parody, you must have jumped and run to the tv! However, were you disappointed? 2ge+her may not have been the movie one had expected; it definitely had a variety of appealing characteristics. Boy bands are continuously bashed; even calling these groups "boy bands" is insulting (but I won't be so sensitive ^_^). However, the movie does contain much subtle boy-band-bashing... their songs are chock full of lyrics for the insane (just check out their titles: "Say it, Don't Spray it")... the outfits are just as crazy, and the boy-band-formula is acknowledged many times, by the manager and members. Though in reality, no "boy band" would ever admit to being put together in such a mechanical and formulated manner, one must admit there are those unexplainable coincidences. Even if you're a true outright boy-band-hater, you'll have to admit that the movie is enjoyable. If the subject does not appeal to you, there's plenty of humor and laughable if not loveable characters (each fitting into their boy band characteristic, of course).
