Synopsis (without Spoilers)
The movie opens at a small, country church. Allegra Geller [Jennifer Jason Leigh], a world-reknown game designer, is a guest at a testing of her newest game, eXistenZ. The story takes place in a future of "game pods," where the players "plug in" through ports in their own bodies. When chaos breaks loose at the testing, the doorman [Jude Law] tries to save Allegra.

They drive through the woods, looking for refuge. Allegra convinces the doorman, Ted Pikul, to get a "port" installed. "It's just like getting your ears pierced," Allegra reassures him. Allegra needs to play her eXistenZ game with someone else to make sure it is okay. The two end up at a gas station to get a port installed. However, more "chaos" breaks loose and soon Allegra and Ted don't know who their friends or enemies are.

Even worse, as they travel into the virtual reality world of the game, they each find themselves in strange situations, where the worlds begin to lose their boundaries.

Reviews(with Spoilers)
If you liked The Matrix, you'll like this movie. eXistenZ takes video games to a whole other level, where virtual reality replaces reality. Mixing science fiction with action and a little bit of romance, the movie paints beautiful imagery with a great storyline.

This movie becomes one that you can watch over and over. The more you watch it, the better you understand it. It is a smart movie, where each and every character and detail is important, which is very hard to find in entertainment nowadays. It is refreshing and ingenius in some ways, and definitely one of the 'best movies you didn't see' (Premiere's January '00 issue lists eXistenZ as a movie that should've been a hit, but wasn't--"David Cronenberg substitutes a wealth of ideas for The Matrix's storehouse of effects.")

Grade: 9 out of 10 cowspots
