Synopsis (without Spoilers)
What is the Matrix? The movie opens with a mysterious young woman running from the police. As the guards try to surround her, she attacks, and vanishes. Suddenly, a mysterious "breed" of men arrive, that look alike and dress in black business suits. They chase the mysterious woman, and strangely enough, are able to move at the same lightning-quick speed as she. As the pursuit ends, we are suddenly transported to Neo [Keanu Reeves], asleep at his computer. As the camera focuses on the monitor, the words Wake up, Neo appear. Neo wakes up suddenly, and stares at the screen that seems to be communicating with him. The words Follow the white rabbit appear as some of Neo's "business associates" show up. He gives the greasy-looking guy at his door a computer chip; the guy takes one look at Neo's pasty complexion and offers him a chance to tag along. Neo refuses until he sees that his "associates" dominatrix girlfriend has a white rabbit tattooed on her shoulder.

The Suits And so the journey begins. As Neo stands at the sidelines of the nightclub, a woman suddenly whispers in his ear to be careful. Of course, Neo is surprised and taken aback by her presence, but also intrigued.

The next day at work, he receives a package. It is a cell phone. As he holds it in his hand, it suddenly rings. As he answers, a deep voice asks him if he wants to know what the Matrix is. He is again intrigued. The voice identifies itself as Morpheus, and asks him to follow his advice. As Neo listens, Morpheus tells him that there are people coming after him. To Neo's surprise, Morpheus predictions are correct, and these people, the "suits" at the beginning of the movie, have just entered his office building. He listens to Morpheus's directions and crawls through the maze of cubicles to escape. When it comes down to crawling down the office building from outside, though, Neo gives up. He is taken into the "suits"'s custody.

This is only the beginning of the adventure. As Neo wakes up from dream after dream, he begins to wonder what reality really is. The world of reality, he finds, is something entirely different from what he had imagined, and that discovery leads to the meaning of the Matrix.

Reviews (with Spoilers)
From the time I heard The Matrix was coming out, I wanted to see it. However, I really didn't have a chance to see the movie until it was in discount theatres, which was really to my advantage. I really had no idea of what I was in for as I sat down to watch it for the first time.

As the first few minutes passed, I was really taken aback by the direction of the movie. There was a lot of style to it, even the clubhouse scene, with its flashing lights, and mystery. The mystery was just the beginning though, and I couldn't wait to see more.

If you thought that the beginning was boring, I did too (maybe because I saw the movie a bit too many times). My favorite parts of the movie were after Neo had found out what the Matrix was; the action sequences were just, for lack of a better word, AWESOME!! Since there was a lot of computer graphics, the directors could do a lot more with the film. Some of the best parts included the choosing of the pills, the dual between Neo and Morpheus, and especially the saving of Morpheus (both the times when Neo and Trinity enter the office building... slow-mo was AWESOME, as well as the helicopter scene, where Neo saved Trinity). I have to admit that the graphics helped out a lot, and the casting was superb! Let me kick your ass

But in highlighting the great and awe-inspiring graphics, I don't mean to disregard the story line. I also think that the movie was good because of the story, and the philosophy of the story. I had thought about the philosophy of the "matrix" before, but when I actually saw it in action in a great and entertaining movie like The Matrix, it was just too good to be true.

Also, the Wachowski brothers did a brilliant job directing; to get something so creative and unique on film the way they did is really an accomplishment, and it shows that people appreciate it through the box office revenues the movie surprisingly pulled.

Grade: 10 out of 10 cowspots
