JACK AND JILL

Season 1, Episode 2: The Awful Truth

*This episode summary contains spoilers.
Sorry, this might be out of order; I only remember things in scenes, and not in appearance!

In this episode, who should appear but Jack's ex-fiance! Even before the show's title scrolls across the screen, he is at Jack's apartment building, confused. Jill happens to walk by, and the two meet for the first time.

Meanwhile, Jack is at the newstation, complaining about her lack of job, since working at the station is only an internship. Her ex-fiance suddenly shows up, requesting dinner... just to talk. Jack complies, but only to get him to leave.

At Jill's "office," the usual is going on (toys flying everywhere). Jill's supervisor calls him into his office for a moment, mentioning the toy, the Zack-a-matic. Jill remembers that he had taken it home with him, because it had initially been a reject. "Go get it" are his supervisor's seemingly simple instructions.

As Jill scrounges around frantically in his boxes at home (Lisa's place now), he can't understand where the Zack-o-matic is!

Back to Jill's old apartment, Barto is not happy to hear that Mikey is planning to move in. (Mikey is Barto's worst roommate nightmare) As Mikey watches tv, he finds a toy in a paper bag (the toy is never shown!). "It's one of Jill's reject toys," Barto mutters. Mikey claims it for his own.

That night, Jack has dinner with her ex-fiance. She spends most of her time that night practicing for the dinner (she even wrote out a speech!) Audrey stares at her, unbelievingly ("this is so lame") At the dinner, Jack sits their, immovable and set on exacting her revenge. However, her ex does more than expected and tells her that he will never stop loving her, etc. This obviously throws Jack off, and she can't stop herself from crying.

Jill finds himself back at his old apartment, looking for the Zack-o-matic. He asks Barto and Mikey about it, and Mikey goes on about how it's a great sex toy, and his girlfriend loves it. Jill is exasperated, but just wants the toy back. At the office, the BIG boss has started to come down on him. Jill is able to make a few excuses, that he is adjusting the toy, but time is running out.

On the way out, Jill sees Jack and says hello. They then proceed to get into a fight, more or less about the tension that has gone on between them.

As Jill walks out of the apartment building, he sees the ex-fiance again! "Oh, you just missed her," he lies (although he doesn't know why). They end up going to get coffee, and talk about Jack. Jill mentions that Jack is over the whole marriage thing and has moved on, becoming friends with a certain other guy who lives in the building (again, we hear him say in the overvoice that he has no idea what he's doing).

At the station, Jack is in line for a new position that has opened up (something about editing). This is a funny scene, where music is played and Jack and this random guy she has been competing with are in slow motion. There is a editing test, and Jack seems confident until she admits that she cannot get her ex out of her head. She then quickly leaves the office, and goes straight to her ex's hotel room.

She immediately wants to know "how it happened," etc. Her ex-fiance starts to tell her the details, then refuses to go any further. He admits to her that he did it because he couldn't live up to her standards, that he wasn't the "perfect" guy everyone thought he was, and that he could never live up to her true "perfect" status. Jack seems satisfied, much of the anger gone, and she says goodbye with a kiss. Then, her ex asks sweetly for her to come back with him, and that perhaps they could rebuild what they had.

Back at Jill's and Lisa's, they are eating Chinese while watching a movie, in bed. Jill turns to Lisa and asks why they're suddenly doing this. Lisa replies that she does not feel the change that she thought they would feel after living together. They start to fight about change and how it can't be forced, and it is interrupted by Jack knocking at the door.

After leaving her ex's, Jack needed someone to talk to. Audrey was busy with "company," so she resorted to Lisa. Not knowing/remembering Jill was there, she started telling Lisa that her ex had asked her to move back, and that she was thinking about it. Jill immediately stepped out and told her it was crazy, and that he was a jerk. This reaction obviously did no good for Jill and Lisa's relationship, and Jack suddenly felt that she was the intruder. She leaves quickly.

The next day, Jill is being chewed out by his BIG boss. His job is finally threatened, and the Zack-o-matic has become immensely important.

At night, the gang ends up at the bar again. Jill and Lisa seem okay again, and Jill tells Lisa that he has a surprise for her. Jack suddenly drops by with her ex-fiance and tells them that she is moving back to Boston. Jill is obviously surprised by this, but says nothing.

Lisa suddenly wants to leave the bar, and as they walk home, Jill tells her what the surprise is. He holds out a few movies (sappy ones) and tells her that he is ready to watch movies while eating Chinese in bed. Her response? "I can't keep doing this," Lisa says exasperated. Jill cannot believe his ears, and asks if she is breaking up with him. Yes, is her only answer. "A relationship shouldn't be forced," Lisa starts to explain, but Jill doesn't seem to understand. Lisa tells him that that is precisely the point.

The next morning, Jill is somber at work. He returns the Zack-o-matic to the BIG boss, and as soon as he leaves the office, his boss calls home to reassure his wife, that they have their toy back. (Strange interjection of humor amidst this change.)

At the tv station, Jack talks the break-up over with Lisa. Lisa figured that she didn't want someone who didn't completely love her, and she felt that when she was with Jill, she felt like she was with a robot. This conversation seems to ready future episodes for a romance between Jack and Jill.

However, no romance (and no show) can happen if Jack moves back to Boston. Audrey helps her pack her clothes, and mentions that perhaps she hasn't been the best roommate to Jack. Jack begins to regret things, and as she is thinking about her new life here, her fiance pulls up to the apartment building. He bounds in, cheerful and relentless; however, Jack turns to him and says, determined, that she'd rather stay and start a new life. His parade rained on, her ex leaves the scene, and Jack takes a breath of fresh air.

Can you believe this is Jill??
