What could follow up such a great premiere?

Liz starts off the story, narrating from her diary again.

While she wonders what Max is doing, Max is startled awake by a figure at his window. He almost hits the intruder with his baseball bat, but then realizes it's just Michael.

At 1:30am, Michael can't sleep. He is too busy wondering about their future, and the mysterious fourth alien whose handprint was in the photograph the Sheriff showed Liz.

At work, Maria is expressing her worries to Liz. Her fear of "aliens" leads to her babbling on and on about it. Funny thing: the two figure out a code for "aliens": Czechoslovakians, they call them.

Who is she really? At school the next day, Liz is noticing Max's "soulful eyes" when a woman appears at the door. She introduces herself as the substitute for the geometry class, and takes role. When she calls Michael's name and no one answers, she looks to Max.

After class, Liz tells Max her fears about the substitute. "...She was asking all those questions about Michael." Max isn't worried though.

Valenti steps into the police building and an FBI agent is sitting in the lobby. Even stranger, the agent says his assignment is to just "sit there."

Back at school, Liz is expressing her fears about the substitute teacher again, only to Maria this time. Difference: Maria agrees with her.

At her locker, Liz and Maria spot Kyle walking toward them. Liz isn't worried about Kyle... their relationship was "casual" and only "over the summer." However, Kyle approaches her and hugs her warmly, calling her "my girl." He starts lecturing her about how a couple should treat each other (be punctual), but Liz spots Max and leaves him.

In her hurry, Liz bumps into the substitute teacher, Ms. Depolski. Her papers fall everywhere, and Liz stoops to help pick them up. That's when she spots the file on Michael, with his photo and all his info.

Liz ends up at Michael's house later that day, to warn him about Depolski. She is surprised to see his home as a trailer, and his dad as a drunken man wearing only underwear. Michael thanks her, and they have a moment of understanding.

Late that night, Valenti is on the phone, inquiring about the agent in his office. He gets no info, and is worried. On a whim, he takes a secret key that is stapled to the folders on UFO incidents, and hides it.

Funny thing: Michael wanders into the police building, pretending to sell chocolate for charity. He tries to slide past the deputy at the front desk, but doesn't get anywhere.

As Michael is telling Max and Isabelle, they stare at him in disbelief. Isabelle is upset, since she confesses she likes her life in Roswell. Michael insists that they have to figure out their past, and the files in Valenti's office are the solution.

When Max finds out that Depolski had files on Michael and other students, he is still not worried... Until he sees Depolski, Valenti, and the principal talking in an office.

In the girls' bathroom (appropriate place), Liz tells Maria that Max asked her to meet him in the "eraser room." The "eraser room" is notorious for "taking the best of us," says Maria in a lecture to Maria on the evils of reality.

Liz and Max in the infamous eraser room! Valenti is sitting quietly in his office when a few FBI agents bust in and start taking all the files he has. "You found blood on the dress," he asserts (see Ep1), and leaves quickly (with the hidden key).

In the eraser room, Liz is nervous about their meeting. Max, however, gets right to the point. Depolski "isn't who she appears to be," he confides in her. They watch over her office through the eraser room.

While they wait, Liz expresses some of Maria's fears. Max laughs them off, and they bond a bit over their opposite pasts. When Depolski finally comes into her office, they overhear her saying she is going to visit Michael.

The gang is freaking out now. Liz blows off her waitressing duties, but before she can leave, Alex suddenly shows up and wants to know what's going on. Funny thing: they say its cramps, and suddenly he goes away.

Meanwhile, Max tells Michael about Depolski. Then, Max and Liz head to Michael's house and wait under some trees for Depolski to show up. Kyle spotted and followed them, trying to see what was going on. After some funny misunderstandings, Kyle runs up to their jeep and makes some noise, causing Depolski to notice their presence.

Too bad only Michael saw the images. After Max drops Liz off, he and Isabelle meet up and go after Michael, who has climbed up into the sheriff's office. Max and Isabelle see the sheriff approach, and Isabelle tries to distract him.

Max hurries Michael along. Right then, Michael finds the hidden key... Once he touches it, images flash through his head, and he is thrown across the room. The sheriff hears this, and runs upstairs, but by the time he gets to his office, Michael and Max have made it outside.

After they drive Michael home, they each try to touch the key, but no one else has images. We see a bit into Michael's character in this episode; he admits that at least he can pack a suitcase and leave anytime, whereas it'd be difficult for Max and Isabelle.

At school the next day, Depolski admits to Liz that she is not a substitute teacher, but the new guidance counselor. Ah, this ties up the loose ends on why she has been so worried about Michael.

Liz's narration ends this episode, talking about secrets dividing people and bringing them closer together.
