Roswell, NM is in the middle of a heat wave! As Maria is finishing work at the Crashdown after hours, she sees Michael at the door. They just begin going at it, on the countertops; at this time, Liz comes down and sees what's going on, eyes wide.

In the overvoice, Liz talks about how everyone in Roswell is going "crazy" because of the heat. As she walks down the halls, she sees everyone in pairs, which makes her realize how slow things were going in her life.

When she sees Kyle and his new girlfriend Becky (looks like head cheerleader type), they tell her about a party happening at the old soap factory. She finds Max at the library and asks him to it, as well as asks him about Michael acting strange. The bathroom seems like a popular place to chat... Meanwhile, Amy Deluca, Maria's mother, has shown up at school, enraged because Depolski hasn't shown up for their meeting. She bumps into Valenti, who happens to be there interrogating Alex.

Liz sees Alex at the bike rack, and he gives nothing but hatred for Liz. "I want to tell you, but it's not my secret to tell," Liz tries to explain, but Alex doesn't listen. Funny scene after this: in the bathroom, Max and Michael discuss the new "Maria and Michael" relationship, and at the same time, so do Maria and Liz. Their relationship seems to be mostly superficial, since they always just start kissing, without any introductions or pleasantries at all.

Cut to the Crashdown, Amy (Deluca) is trying to sell more of her alien products, when Valenti walks in. He tells Amy the truth about the time, years ago, when he arrested her at a protest. It was because he thought she was cute!

That night, Isabelle goes into Alex's dreams. She follows "Dream Alex" along the school halls, and into a classroom. The classroom turns into a restaurant, where Alex wears a suit and waits for someone. Isabelle sits back and watches, and is surprised to see "Dream Isabelle" walk in! She and "Dream Alex" dance, while Isabelle watches in shock. "You're just afraid to show who you really are... but you can show me," Alex says calmly, as the continue dancing.

After confronting a blushing Isabelle and getting no information on her dream-walking, Max talks to a confused Michael about his Maria situation. He then finds Liz in the science lab, trying to mate slugs! When they get to the Maria and Michael topic, Liz wonders aloud why they can be together, but she and Max can't. Max explains that he's not afraid of them getting together and the relationship working out, but the exact opposite (that it would work out really well). Max re-establishes his notion that aliens and humans just weren't meant to be together.

At the party, Liz and Maria look for Max and Michael. When Maria and Michael find each other, they begin arguing again. Michael accuses Maria of getting "too intense," but Maria just wants a real relationship. Meanwhile, Isabelle is confidently sweet-talking a bewildered Alex, who she has invited to the party. When it seems she is about to tell him about their secret, Alex suspects that she wants to know what he told Valenti and walks out before Isabelle can get a word in.

Change scenes to Valenti and Amy, dining at a fancy restaurant! Valenti gets a message in the middle of their conversation, and leaves to get to the soap factory. Apparently, a fire has started because of the bad wiring.

When Max and Liz go back in to get the others, Liz can only find Alex. Unfortunately, a few guys run past them and hand them their liquor... and at that time, Valenti shows up and arrests them.

As the night goes on, Alex and Liz find themselves alone, in a jailcell. Finally, Alex gets so outraged that he decides to tell Valenti everything, leaving Liz to the point where she tells him the aliens' secret. When Valenti appears, he asks for the truth, and when he begins to ask about Max, Isabelle, and Depolski's disappearance, Alex begins to take Liz seriously. He then smartly tells Valenti that he is violating their rights to keep them in jail. Next thing we know, the two are walking out, free.

As Liz is finishing up her journal entry, she hears Max calling her name. He climbs up a ladder to her balcony (Romeo and Juliet anyone?) and they finally, finally kiss.
