"Incidentally you may have noticed that, all through the ages, prominant men have prominant noses." SH, "The Woman in Green"
Ever wonder just HOW Basil could have gotten such a strange, unusual, and *sigh* lovely name?
Eve Titus' character was named in honor of actor Basil Rathbone, who played Sherlock Holmes in fourteen films in the forties. These rather cheesy little films pitted the Master against nazis and giant spiders. But I think they're actually pretty cool, although twelve of them were updated to "present day". I highly recommend "The Woman in Green" and "The Spider Woman" whenever you're in the mood to curl up for a late night bit of kitsch. If you're a purist Victorian nut, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" may be more to your liking. I haven't seen any versions of "Hound of the Baskervilles" yet, since I want to read the original story first.
One day, while watching "Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman" with me, my dad casually commented on Basil Rathbone's resemblance to Basil of Baker Street. I think he mighta had something there but, well, you be the judge.
Wish I could have more comparison pictures, but this'll have to do until more GMD pics pop up...
Of-Baker-Street's design was supposedly based on Leslie Howard, and before that he was being modelled after Bing Crosby(!). But I'm quite sure the two Basils have more in common than a name.
