The knight sees the family getting ready to escape
Death: "Your move Antonius Block. Have you lost interest in our game?"
Knight: "Lost interest? On the contrary."
Death: "You look anxious. Are you hiding something."
Knight: "Nothing escapes you, right?"
Death: "Nothing escapes me; Nobody escapes me."
Knight: "I'm anxious, that is true"
Death: "You are afraid"
The knight straightens out his cloak and accidentally flips the chess-board over.
Knight: "I can not remember how the pieces where placed"
Death: "He, he. But I remember. You won't escape that easily!"
The Knight smiles as the familys carriage leaves the scene. Death is occupied placing out the pieces again.
Death: "Now I see something interesting..."
Knight (worried): "What do you see?"
Death: "You're mate in my next move."
Knight (relieved): "That is true..."
Death: "Did you enjoy your postponement?"
Knight: "Yes I did."
Death: "I'm glad. I'll leave you for now, but next time we meet the time for you and your companions are out."
Death rises to leave.
Knight: "And you will divulge your secrets?"
Death: "I bear no secrets"
Knight: "So you know nothing?"
Death: "I am unknowing"
The Knight smiles and suddenly Death realizes he somehow has lost the game.
"There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing
Is it raining?
Is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of hell a-glowing?
Is the Grisly Reaper mowing?
Yes, the danger must be growing
'Cause the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!"
~~Willy Wonka
"Sobbing wildly, he rose above the grain again and again and hewed to left and right and left and right. Over and over and over! Slicing out huge scars in green wheat and ripe wheat, with no selection and no care, cursing, swearing, the blade singing up in the sun and falling with a singing whistle! Down!
Bombs shattered London, Moscow, Tokyo, and the kilns of Belsen and Buchenwald took fire. The blade sang, crimson wet.
Mushrooms vomited out blind suns at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The grain wept in a green rain, falling.
Korea, Indo-China, Egypt, India trembled; Asia stirred, Africa woke in the night...
And the blade went on rising, crashing, severing, with the fury and rage of a man who has lost and lost so much that he no longer cares what he does to the world." ~ Ray Bradbury, "The Scythe"

ROXANE
Did you tell him To go away?
CYRANO
For the time being, yes. I said: "Excuse me--this is Saturday--
I have a previous engagement, one I cannot miss, even for you-- Come back An hour from now."
ROXANE
Your friend will have to wait; I shall not let you go till dark.
CYRANO
(Very gently) Perhaps A little before dark, I must go... (He leans back in the chair, and closes his eyes...)
