The Man
With No Name (Clint Eastwood)
returns in this second installment of the Dollars trilogy, preceded by “A Fistful of
Dollars” (1964) and followed by “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”
(1967). This time he joins forces with another bounty hunter to get the reward
money on the sadistic madman Indio who is the leader of a gang of bandits,
which includes Klaus Kinski, who plays the hunchback. Watch for the scene in
which Lee Van Cleef (Colonel Douglas Mortimer) lights a smoke off the
hunchback’s hump. Kinski is most famous for his role in the 1972 Werner Herzog
directed film “Aguirre,
Der Zurn Gottes” (The Wrath of God) as the title conquistador who succumbs
to insanity as he leads a quest to find the mythical city of gold in 1590.
“For a
Few Dollars More” might be called a cult film, a spaghetti western, a B-film.
But I like it for some unknown reason and thought I’d share it. Sergio
Leone does a fine job of direction, as he attempts to satiate a blood lust
by making this film, apparently. It is very violent. I counted once, and
arrived at about the number of 48 or so killings in the film.
The film
is available on video, laserdisc, and DVD in wide screen format, with the
original trailer. So there is no excuse for not seeing this film but laziness
or apathy.
