A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

1999

Undoubtedly the most accessible version of Shakespeare's "dream" play that I've ever seen, on either screen OR stage. A near-perfect cast(especially Kevin Kline and Calista Flockhart) inhabit the roles beautifully, and the story seems more "believable" than ever before . Relocating the story to 19th Century Tuscany gives the director the opportunity to embellish the Shakesperean original scenes, with Italianate scenes set to the exquisite music of Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti and Mascagni. These scenes fit in, and comment on the originals, perfectly. Everything is so much in the style of Franco Zeffirelli, that it's amazing that he had nothing to do with it. All in all, a truly magical, and VERY comical "dream."
