The last 20 minutes of this movie almost redeemed this exercise in mediocrity. ALMOST!!! What should have been an exciting, suspenseful, and terrifying film was merely preposterous and annoying! Missing, among MANY other things, was the expert hand of a Hitchcock. !!! When was the last time that you rooted for the bad guys to kill the hero? Jeff Bridges' performance as the hero, was one of the most over-the-top hysterical acting jobs that I have seen on film; truly ridiculous. Let's fault the writing perhaps, (because I like Jeff Bridges.) On the other hand, the acting of Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack, as the villains, can't be faulted -just perfect. Very disappointing;I really wanted to like this one. |

Jeff Bridges plays a college professor and single father who discovers that his next door neighbors (Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack) are terrorists in this film which tries to be frightening but really comes off as just another piece of fiction. The best example I can give to describe this is the way the film takes real events and changes them enough to make it seem like its all just "make believe". Couple that with Bridges' melodramatic ranting and ravings and you have one over-rated thriller that is sure to keep you tense... but in a really annoying way. Thumbs up, however, to the technical aspects of the film (cinematography and editing especially) and to whomever made the decision to go with such a gutsy ending. All things considered though, wait for video. |
