AUTUMN TALE |
1999 |
This film, set dramatically in the vineyards of Southern France, tells the story of a happily married woman "of a certain age" as the French say, who plays matchmaker for her shy friend who owns a vineyard. But the story really doesn't matter. After all, this IS a French film. What does matter are the beautifully drawn characters...what they say, what they do, and how they do it. These are real people. You're almost meant to feel like a voyeur or eavesdropper. At one point, I actually turned away so as not to embarrass the people on screen! The setting is so picturesque that you just want to hop on a plane for Provence. Because of the complex interpersonal relationships developed in the film, I was trying to imagine the same story directed by Ingmar Bergman or Woody Allen. It's their kind of film. Eric Rohmer, however, did a beautiful job of directing. |
