BEING JOHN MALKOVICH |
1999 |
This is definitely one of the oddest, yet most original movies you will see this year. John Cusack plays an out of work puppeteer who, at his new job, finds a portal that puts you inside John Malkovich's head for fifteen minutes and then spits you out onto the New Jersey Turnpike. Enough said? Well, that's all I'm going to tell you. Cameron Diaz plays Cusack's wife and John Malkovich plays himself in this very funny, but very strange film. You're either going to love or hate this one, but, despite what some critics are saying, its not best picture material. |

Starting with the title, this film is one of the most creative, original, and imaginative ones that I've seen in years. An "Alice in Wonderland" for the end of THIS century, the story involves an out-of-work puppeteer(played by a dirty-looking John Cusack,) who, like his predecessor Alice, falls through a hidden portal(this one behind a filing cabinet on the 71/2th floor of an office building!)and into...the brain of John Malkovich. Malkovich's brain may not be Wonderland, but it certainly contains its' share of adventures, involving the puppeteer, his strange wife(a frumpy-looking Cameron Diaz with brown frizzy hair!) and his "business partner." (They charge $200 to have people enter Malkovich's brain!) The "actress"who plays the partner, Catherine Keener, couldn't act at gunpoint!!! This brilliantly written(Charles Kaufman) and directed(the new young wonderboy Spike Jonze)film is not for everyone. But if you're looking for a surrealistic trip into a bizarre fantasy world, this it's for you. |
