BEST IN SHOW

2000

For those of you who scolded me for calling "Meet the Parents" stupid and unfunny, and who asked we what I thought was a really funny film, here's the film. Not only is "Best in Show" funny, it's hilarious and very, very clever. Spoofs and satires are the hardest things to pull off successfully on film, so Christopher Guest and his brilliant ensemble cast of actors must be congratulated for creating this wonderrful "mockumentary." The setting is the mega-dog-show with its prize-winning dogs and their eccentric owners. Some of the actors give performances that seem almost improvised and that almost jump off the screen. The best of these are Christopher Guest himself, as the owner of a bloodhound named Hubert, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara, Michael McKean, and a completely out-of-control Fred Willard as the TV commentator who knows nothing about dogs!
