BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS |
1999 |
Based on the novel by the same name by Kurt Vonnegut, here is yet another good example that some books just cannot be transferred to film. Bruce Willis plays the owner of a car dealership who is going through a mid-life crisis. His sales manager, played by Nick Nolte, likes to dress in women's clothing. He cannot speak to his wife (Barbara Hershey). And, his son is a freaky lounge singer (Lukas Haas). And in the book, all of this adds up to a fable about the emptiness of being a car salesman. On film, however, its really just annoying. The only plus in this movie was the nice performances of Willis and Nolte in roles unaccustomed to them. |

This is the third time that Hollywood has tried to put a Kurt Vonnegut novel on film, and it's the third time that they failed. What is so hilarious in print just comes off as confusing and stupid on screen. However, there was some excellent acting from Bruce Willis(yes, that Bruce Willis!) Nick Nolte, Glenn Headley and Albert Finney. But, it just wasn't enough to make this film enjoyable, or even coherent. |
