DOGMA

1999

Before I talk about this movie, I would like to comment on the film's director, Kevin Smith. He obviously has a lot of creative talent in order to write the screenplays he does. But someone has to tell him to stay out of the director's chair and stop acting, because he cannot act and, even worse, he obviously cannot direct actors. The only actor in this movie who has any talent and did not need Smith's direction was Alan Rickman. All the rest, including Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, were horrible. So, what about the movie? Two fallen angels (Damon and Affleck) try to use a human mistake to earn the right to go back to heaven, but, since getting back into heaven would be proving God fallible, a team of heaven's best (Rickman, Linda Fiorentino Chris Rock, Selma Hayek, Jason Mewes, and Smith himself) sets out to stop them. Of course, to really follow the story, each character has to, at some point, give a brief synopsis of who they are, what their biblical significance is and why they are helping out and that gets a little annoying. If you enjoy Smith's crude and sarcastic humor, however, the film is very funny and entertaining. I can especially appreciate the overall point that Smith is trying to make about religion in our society.
