FLAWLESS |
1999 |
You get a flawed film of many mood swings, from brutal to sensitive, from exciting to boring...with a hard-to-ignore, flamboyant performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman seems to be popping up everywhere this year, in a wide range of roles in such films as "Happiness," "Flawless," and the much-awaited "Magnolia," as well as Off-Broadway, in the hard-hitting "True West." In this film, he plays the drag queen upstairs, who's hired by stroke-victim cop(Robert De Niro,) to give him singing lessons, in an attempt to regain his speech! If you find THAT a stretch, then you won't believe the birthday party scene, with homophobic cops in party hats, partying with drag queens, the female cardiologist, the old wheelchair-bound lady down the hall, and Carmine, the shirtless, muscular pizza boy!!! |
