GLADIATOR

2000

The epic film is back, and what a welcome return it is. Director Ridley Scott has created nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece, one that can take its' place alongside such classic epics as "Ben-Hur" and "Spartacus." Although computer graphics are used to create a Rome such as has never been seen on screen before, these special effects are used intelligently to SERVE the story. (In other recent blockbusters such as "Star Wars" and "The Matrix," they WERE the story.) In this story of the gladiator who defied the Emperor of Rome, the plot proceeds slowly, deliberately, revealing beautifully-drawn characters who are brilliantly acted by Russell Crowe, Connie Niellsen, Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, and Derek Jacobi. The battle scenes, and the almost-operatic scenes in the Colosseum will set the standard for years to come. Let's hope that more epics follow, but epic films of quality, and not just cheap clones made to cash in on the popularity of this great film.

Here is the first film of 2000 that I can honestly say will go on to become one of the great classic film epics, alongside BEN HUR and SPARTACUS. I like to think of it as BRAVEHEART times ten. When the son of Roman Caesar Marcus Aurelius, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), finds out that his father is planning to appoint his greatest general, Maximus (Russell Crowe) to succeed him after his death, Commodus has Maximus exiled and takes the throne of Rome for himself. Maximus barely escapes death only to find himself enslaved and doomed to finish his life as a barbaric gladiator. The opening battle scene will blow you away and its really only the tip of the iceberg. As long as the Academy hasn't forgotten about his film come February, I see another best actor nom for Crowe, a best director nom for Ridley Scott, a best original score nom and a nomination for best picture. Its two hours and 45 minutes and nothing short of amazing. Go see it!
