HANNIBAL |
2001 |
Is it as good as "Silence?" No, not as good. This one is better! [Hannibal is one of the two greatest horror novels of the last 50 years. The Exorcist is the other.] Just as Hannibal the book was better than Silence.... the book, so too is the movie. In 11 years, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) has grown into a more sympathetic and human monster. (An oxymoron? Not really) With her new maturity, Clarice Starling (Julienne Moore, taking over for Jodie Foster,) is now a match for her nemesis. A new villain, Mason Verger (an unrecognizable Gary Oldman,) is now in the equation, and although not as evil as he is in the book, in one scene you will still find yourself rooting for Hannibal to defeat Verger. The film, beautifully filmed in part, in an operatic-looking and picturesque Florence, is perfect in every way save one. Someone has foolishly decided to change the perfectly logical, and shocking, ending of the book. If you've read the book, however, this won't detract from your "enjoyment" of this very elegant, classy horror film. |

Why do you think you'll enjoy this film? Do you want to see Anthony Hopkins return to the role that he may be most famous for, Hannibal Lechter? Perhaps you're interested in seeing Julianne Moore in the role of FBI agent Clarice Starling and doing her best Jodi Foster impression. Or maybe its because you deep down want to see brains being eaten and intestines spilling all over the ground. Here is what I think. I think you've heard that the performances are great, that the story is edgy and suspenseful, and that director Ridley Scott has created an elegant and stylish film worthy of following up Gladiator. Most likely, however, you are drawn in by the graphic violence and alarming subject matter. Just admit it. |
