ILLUMINATA

1999

Let me say it right off, this is the best movie that I've seen since my favorite of last year, "Shakespeare in Love!" As in that film, it's not as much about story, as it is about the very art, craft, and business of theater itself. John Turturro has written, directed, and acted in a masterpiece in the style of Federico Fellini...a film that the master himself would have been proud to have made. A visual stunner, every scene is framed like a painting. The ensemble of actors, who seem to be having the time of their lives, includes the aging prima donna(Susan Sarandon,) the homosexual theater critic(Christopher Walken,) the leading man (Rufus Sewall,) the theater managers(Donal McCann and Beverly D'Angelo), the object of the critic's affections(Bill Irwin,)the veteran, but senile actor(Ben Gazzara,) and the star(Mrs. John Turturro, Katherine Borowitz.) The magnificent score is by opera composer William Bolcom, and it could stand on its' own as a concert piece. As I said before, it's a masterpiece!

John Turturro gives us a touching and comical glimpse into the lives of several members of an acting company in his latest film. The story, a bit slow at times, focuses on the company's playwright and his struggle between the love he feels for his wife and his desire to see his new play, Illuminata, performed. It would be impossible, however, to deny that Turturro gives us one of the most stylish and beautiful movies of the year. Impressive performances by Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken, as well as Turturro himself and his wife, Katherine Borowitz, also make the film enjoyable. If you enjoy the theatre, this one is a must.
