Based on what I heard from critics, the quote above is what I thought that my review would consist of. Instead, this film turned out to be a sweet, gentle, and often moving story about a primatologist who has lived with gorillas, and after a traumatic experience, is now living in a prison for the criminally insane. There IS a bit of Hannibal Lecter about this scientist, but Anthony Hopkins shows the human side of the man. Cuba Gooding, Jr. after a weak start, does a fine job of portraying the psychiatrist who tries to unravel the mysteries of this man's mind. A daughter is thrown in(Maura Tierney) as a possible love interest, but this angle is never explored. Not a great film, but an entertaining one. |
