LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST

2000

Kenneth Brannagh has created a daring experiment using Shakespeare's dumbest play. He's thrown out half of the lines, and replaced them with the songs of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin. Only a purist would miss the forgettable lines, and the substituted songs and dances are charming and very witty. Everything is acted in a tongue-in-cheek way. Think Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Busby Berkley. The Shakespeareans(Brannagh, Natasha McElhone, Geraldine McEwan and Adrian Lester) come off the best, but even Alicia Silverstone(yes, you read right!) and Nathan Lane do very well. Whenever actor Timothy Smalls is on screen as Armado he steals the show;he's hilarious. The sets and costumes are beautiful, atmospheric., and very colorful. Go with an open mind and it'll win you over. (It helped to have seen it at the Harvard Square Cinema where the sophisticated audience applauded after every number!) Truly, "there's no business like show business."
