If you're a fan of the Farrelly brothers films ("Dumb and Dumber," "There's Something About Mary,") as I am, then you'll really enjoy HALF of their new film. Because, like its main character Charlie (Jim Carrey,) this film has a split personality. Half of it is typical politically incorrect, potty-mouthed, bathroom humor, as in the best Farrelly brothers movies and that half is very funny, but the other half is a sweet, gentle love story, with some bad cop/good cop excitement thrown in; the mix is not a good one. Jim Carrey is excellent as both Charlie AND Hank, and his three African-American sons (don't ask!) steal every scene that they're in. Renee Zellweger plays Renee Zellweger! The Farrelly brothers home state of Rhode Island is very photogenic; who'd have thought it? |

Jim Carrey reunites with the Farrelly Brothers in their latest comedy, which is about a Rhode Island state cop with schizophrenia. In a strong contrast to their last film, OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE, what we are given is a throwback to the "toilet humor" of DUMB AND DUMBER and KINGPIN where not only are the jokes not funny, but they make your stomach turn. Carrey and co-star Renee Zellweger both give mediocre performances and have as little chemistry on screen as they seem to have off screen (don't get me started about Renee at the Oscars). But the real problem here is the lack of any sort of intelligent plot and the 15 to 20 minute intervals between a few scenes that are actually funny. Maybe the director knew this would be a dud all along because it was even filmed on some really crappy film stock that gives it this awful pale, faded look. Why bother? |
