MEN OF HONOR

2000

Cuba Gooding Jr., in possibly his best performance yet, stars as Carl Brashear, the first African-American man to become a Master Chief diver in the Navy. Robert Deniro is the man who trains him, tries to break him and would ultimately become his ally. It's a great inspirational story about a man who was pushed down throughout his career but fought against the adversity and overcame it. In all respects, the film has a very classic look and feel to it. Deniro's accent was kind of all over the place, but otherwise I can't really give you a good reason why you shouldn't go see this film. It isn't action-packed, but it's a well-paced story that I just could not help enjoying (as much as I originally thought I was going to hate it). Look for a few Oscar noms to come out of this one.
