OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE

1999

Just as most comedians long to play Hamlet, so to, I guess do the Farrelly brothers(Dumb and Dumber; Kingpin; There's Something About Mary.) THIS is their Hamlet! Marketed, deceitfully, to attract the Adam Sandler vomit-and-semen crowd, this film,in actuality, would more likely appeal to those people who enjoyed last year's "October Sky." It's a gentle, moving, and sensitive coming-of-age story. What a pleasure it is to see real-life teen-agers on screen, instead of the usual brain-dead neanderthals(although being an attempt at recreating "real life," there are some of THEM here, as well.) Beautifully written, acted, and directed; I loved every minute of this surprising film.

A young boy rises above the filth of mid-70s Pawtucket, R.I., in this coming of age film written by the Farrelly brothers. When Tim "Dumph" Dumphy gets into troble with the law, he is sent to a prep school in Connecticut to be reformed and he learns more about life, his family and himself than he could've ever imagined. Usually known for their crude and unusual humor, the Farrelly brothers create for us a truly honest and real story that many of us can relate to. Alec Baldwin gives an excellent performance as Dumph's father who has raised both Dumph and his crippled brother alone since their mother passed years ago. Definitely one of the best movies of the summer.
