RETURN TO ME

2000

Here is the first great romantic comedy of the new millennium. Its your classic "boy loses wife, girl gets heart transplant, boy meets girl, girl runs away from boy, boy chases after her" story. David Duchovny proves that he really can act outside of The X-Files, Minnie Driver is wonderful as always and there are good supporting performances from Carrol O'Connor, Robert Loggia and Bonnie Hunt. While the film gets off to a slow start, it eventually sucks you in and its just so damn charming that you can't help but like it. It is also a nice directorial/screenwriting debut for actress Bonnie Hunt (you probably know her as the older sister from Jerry Maguire).

To put the most positive spin on this review, this is the perfect "chick flick/date film." On the other hand, this movie mostly wastes the talents of several good character actors(Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, Bonnie Hunt, and Jim Beluschi) in the service of a sappy, soap-opera, tearjerker of a story. Here's the plot, YOU decide: boy(David Duchovny) falls in love with girl(Minnie Driver) who, unknown to either, is the recipient of his dead wife's transplanted heart!!! If you can buy that one, then I have an autographed copy of the Bible that I'd like to sell you.
