RUN LOLA RUN

1999

Getting tired of ordinary films? Here is something different for you. Our heroine, Lola, has 20 minutes to get 100,000 deutsche marks to save her boyfriend's life. Who will she turn to? Can she make it in time? With superb editing and cinematography, the film takes on three separate versions of Lola's quest to raise the cash. Each time slight differences determine Lola's success or failure and we get to see how her actions affect the people she comes into contact with. Strong performances along with the brilliance and ingenuity of this highly original film make it a pleasure to give it my highest rating...

A triumph of cinematography, this is easily the most creative film of the year thus far. Like the Japanese classic, "Rashomon," it retells its' story in three alternate ways with subtle variations and dramatically different outcomes. Lola, a grungy young woman from East Berlin has to come up with 100,000 deutche marks in 20 minutes, to save her drug-dealer boy friend from being killed by the thug for whom he works. That's the story, but you won't believe what the director Tom Tykwer does with it!
