THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT |
1999 |
Here is the perfect example of a great idea, but someone just dropped the ball. Three film students go off into the woods to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch and are never seen again. A year after their disappearance the film they shot in the last few days of their lives is found. So, the whole movie was filmed on a camcorder and 16mm, no-name actors were used and there was very little blood and guts (and no monsters) and all in an effort to make you think that this is a real documentary you are watching. While I was very scared in certain parts of this movie, I think it was more because of what I expected to happen rather than what was happening. And the ending, which could have great, really falls flat. The acting was good and I thought the story moved along well, but the characters were not very likeable and you find yourself waiting for them to start getting killed off. What could have been one of the scariest movies ever made turns out to be a big disappointment. |

You can't just give three inexperienced "actors" three video cameras, put them in the woods, and tell them the vaguest summary of a witch story, and expect them to come up with this year's great horror film. The marketing of the film, and the hype created on the internet were brilliant, but the film is a mess. Any five minutes of "Psycho," "Rosemary's Baby," or "The Exorcist" were scarier than this entire film. |
