THE EXORCIST (re-release with additional reel of previously unseen footage)

2000

I have no idea how much film there is in a reel of film, nor could I tell you which scenes were put back in, but that's how much film has been restored to this classic of the horror-film genre. What I do know is that, from the very first scenes of the film, there is an unbearable tension, a suspense, and a feeling of impending doom that makes the movie almost uncomfortable to watch. I can't remember how I felt watching the film 26 years ago, but I know that it couldn't have been any scarier then, than it was seeing it tonight! Whether that should be credited to the writer, the director, or to the actors I don't know. Let's just say that everyone concerned contributed a great deal to the overall impact of the work. It's amazing how little of the film's horror actually comes from special effects. It's the story as conveyed by the actors that terrifies the viewer. The film holds up beautifully. With the exception of some inappropriate smoking and some references to Ritalin(producing laughs in the audience!)this film could have been made this year. The acting is superb. Bravos to actors Ellen Burstyn, Max VonSydow, Linda Blair, Lee J. Cobb and Jason Miller, to director William Friedkin, and to writer William Blatty. Oh, and let's not forget the brilliant make-up of Dick Smith. Go, and have the hell scared out of you!
