THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC |
1999 |
Most of you probably already know the story of Joan of Arc, the french peasant girl who led the French to victory over the English in the early 1400's and then was burned at the stake for heresy. The story is certainly interesting enough to fill 2 and a half hours and I really enjoyed the use of Dustin Hoffman (who is billed as "The Conscience") as a means to examining her actions and how they might have been something other than a calling from God. Milla Jovovich ,however, is very inconsistent in her performance as Joan although she looks absolutely perfect in the part. John Malkovich and Faye Dunaway are exceptional as always. Director Luc Besson creates many beautiful, elaborate scenes but I also found many to be overly and unnecessarily violent and graphic. And if this is an accurate portrayal of Joan, I think I would have lit her up myself. |
